The Borinquen Post 508 celebrated Mother’s Day Saturday night at their location in West Covina with a dinner and a dance entertained by the live music of Johnny Polanco y su Conjunto Amistad and by the recorded tunes of DJ Papo El Salsero.
The Boriquen Post 508 was chartered as an American Legion post in 1954. Their name, “Borinquen,” was given in honor of the island out of which many of the members are from - be it by birth or by ancestry - Puerto Rico. The post is, nonetheless, likewise joined by veterans of varied backgrounds. Its only true requirement is to have actively served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force of the United States, or US Merchant Marines any time since World War I to the present and to have been honorably discharged or separated.
Present at the dance were at least a dozen veterans. Out of them four served in World War I. One out of those four attended with his lady of 66 years, a dame he met on Times Square upon his return from the war. The leader of the Salsa band performing, Johnny Polanco, is himself a veteran and a member of Borinquen 508.
The proceeds from the event went to benefit the post. In an evening full of veteran camaraderie, a few hundred people celebrated their families’ matriarchs with the things they hold dearest to their hearts: the music and the food of their homeland, and the honor of their military service.
If you’ve seen our Ritmo Bello YouTube videos online, you know that we cover all sorts of local San Diego salsa and Latin events. In doing so we hope to give you, the viewer, a small glimpse into the breadth of talent and life that comes from our local dance scene. Someone recently asked me why we haven’t upgraded to high definition for those videos. Here is what our current videos look like in standard definition (this is a great performance but unfortunately you see how grainy the video gets):
Contrast that with this YouTube video shot in full 1080p HD video and you can clearly see the difference:
So why haven’t we upgraded to HD yet? It’s simply outside of our current monthly household budget (we need that to live). Many of you may not realize that Ritmo Bello is run by Elizabeth and myself (John) here locally using funds from our own pockets. The total costs include maintaining the Ritmo Bello website, camera equipment, editing software, website bandwidth, and covering the costs of attending many of the events that appear in our YouTube videos. In addition to this, we cover the full costs for maintaining the popular San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group directly from our own budget as well.
We set up a “challenge” to see if the local San Diego salsa and Latin dancers can help us bring our YouTube videos to full HD quality. Below you will see a donation counter that will track any monetary contributions or donations you are willing to provide us (even if it is just $1.00). Your donations go directly to our costs of upgrading to an HD camera, obtaining quality editing software, and other things we’ll need to make the leap to high definition. We have close to 3 months to reach our goal and we encourage you to contribute whatever you can by simply clicking on the “ChipIn” button to make a donation:

Chino Espinoza y los Duenos del Son traveled to San Francisco to perform at Roccapulco Nightclub on Halloween night.
The biggest Cuban Halloween party in town was held at Luminarias Restaurant in Monterey Park on Friday. Hansel y Raul, as well as Charanga Cubana performed.
Orquesta Tabaco y Ron continued the Halloween celebrations on Friday at Stevens Steakhouse, along with the Angel Lebron y Sabor Latino Salsa band.
The Latino Professional Network's Halloween event was held on Thursday October 29 at Cicada, in downtown Los Angeles.

If tropical music is your thing and you have a closet full of costumes and are ready to begin the Halloween partying tonight already, here are six options to choose from:
Lucky 7 Mambo at Cicada in downtown L.A. – As part of the Latino Professional Network’s Halloween celebration, this Salsa band will rock the night for a cover charge of $20. This is an event where either a Halloween costume or your regular office attire will do – after all, aren’t you “dressing up” too when you play “professional”? The event starts at 6.30 pm and the earlier you arrive the better your chances will be to enjoy the complimentary tastings of tequila, margaritas, rum, appetizers, and more. If you are a cigar lover, take one with you – the Cicada has a very nice patio. More information about this event at http://www.lpnonline.com/eWebPages/Next-Event-and-RSVP.eWeb
Angel Lebron y Sabor Latino at Minx in Glendale – If you are closer to the Glendale area, you may want to check out the Halloween celebration at Minx with live Salsa music for a cover charge of $10. Along with the live band and recorded music by two DJs, there will be salsa dance performances and a costume contest with cash prizes for the winner. Minx is located at 300 Harvey Drive, in Glendale. The evening starts at 9 pm.
Andy Andy at the Conga Room in downtown LA – The Dominican bachata singer will be at the newest Latin club in downtown L.A. for a cover charge of $25. (However, you can print out this flier to pay $20 instead.) Bachata is a genre of music and dance that originated in the rural neighborhoods of the Dominican Republic. Andy Andy’s performance will be supplemented by recorded Salsa, merengue, and other music genres played by a DJ.
Octavio Figueroa y la Combinacion at Dakota Lounge in Santa Monica – The Peruvian band leader will perform with his band La Combinacion starting at 10.30 pm at the Dakota Lounge, a spot that is becoming increasingly popular for Thursday Salsa dancing in the west side. Cover charge is $10. More information at http://www.2umbao.com
Orquesta Tabaco y Ron at Mama Juana’s – If Studio City is your turf, you may want to check out one of L.A.’s better known Salsa bands for a cover charge of $10. Mama Juana’s is a restaurant and the cover charge is waved with dinner purchase. Some street parking is available but valet parking is the most convenient. More information at http://www.mamajuanas.com
70s Salsa party at Olivia’s in Burbank – Those of you with a warm spot in your hearts for the 70s can enjoy a colorful Halloween party at Olivia’s, located at 245 E. Olive, in Burbank. This is a party with recorded music only. There is a dance class with instructors Mike and Christina at 8 pm. More information is at http://www.mikechristina.com
Johnny Polanco y su Conjunto Amistad will be at the Conga Room this Saturday for the Downtown Costume Ball.
Anyone presenting this flier: http://www.vidasalsera.com/coupon.htm can get into the party for $10 before 9 pm, and $20 thereafter if wearing a costume ($25 without one)
There will be a costume contest with cash prizes and a trip for two to Cancun for the best.
Nice night at the Conga Room with the music of Orquesta Tabaco y Ron on October 24. The guys were looking pretty sharp on stage in what I'm pretty sure were brand new duds!
Orquesta Tabaco y Ron will perform at the Conga Room this Saturday.
Print and present this flier at the door: http://www.VidaSalsera.com/coupon.htm to pay discounted cover charge of $10 up to 10 pm and $20 thereafter.
The event to benefit the Los Angeles Music and Art School was held on Sunday with plenty of musical talent that included four Salsa bands: Lucky 7 Mambo, Johnny Polanco y su Conjunto Amistad, Orquesta Son Mayor, and Chino Espinoza y los Duenos del Son.
It was a seven hour long program supported by those desiring to help the school that inadvertedly turned into a great opportunity for the musicians to socialize with one another in one same venue.

Johnny Polanco y su Conjunto Amistad will perform today starting at 6 pm in the new Promenade of the Santa Anita Mall, in Arcadia. The Puerto Rican bandleader Johnny Polanco and his group have been delighting the L.A. audiences with their selections of Salsa, merengue and cha-cha-cha for over a decade. In addition, the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association will teach dance steps between band sets, at 6.30 pm and 7.45 pm.
This event is free of charge and open to all ages.
Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Center
• 400 S. Baldwin Ave. Suite 231
• Arcadia CA 91007
• 626.445.6255
The Bowl crowd was every bit as diverse as the program, if not more so. The evening's open-air celebrations, with patrons salsa-dancing to the Johnny Polanco y Su Conjunto Amistad band on the Bowl plaza and picnickers toting provisions to their seats, had the feel of a mini-Mardi Gras.

Cuban music lovers and dancers can dress up in their best costumes and celebrate Halloween on Friday, October 30, to the charanga beats of Hansel and Raul, who will be performing in the Grand Ballroom of Luminarias Restaurant, in Monterey Park.
The Latin Grammy winning pair, better known for songs like “Maria Teresa y Danilo” and “Con La Lengua Afuera,” will get the crowd moving not only with their classic hits, but with their new material, such as “La Reina del Baile” a song released in 2003 in their CD “100% Cubano.”
Hansel and Raul’s musical duo began over 30 years ago, in 1976. Some of their work soon became hits not only in the U.S. but throughout Latin America. After several accomplishments and recognitions, including a few Gold records and a performance in the White House for then President Reagan, the pair split up and followed their own paths for almost a decade.
Now together again, they recently recorded “Hansel and Raul Live at the U” at the University of Miami. The new songs are scheduled for release at the end of 2009.
Everyone is welcome to celebrate Halloween to the music of Hansel and Raul. (Rueda dancers will certainly love this pair.) It will be an energetic evening that will also count with the music of Grammy nominated La Charanga Cubana, the selections of SuperDJRobby and the welcoming of Paloma Morales.
